What material are these made from?

Zafety Lug Lock Turbine™ (ZLLT) is based on Zafety Lug Lock® (ZLL) and uses a proprietary thermoplastic polyester resin designed to balance strength and flexibility for retention. It is engineered to perform from -40°C (-40°F) to +160°C (+320°F), with resistance to UV and chemicals encountered in service, including road salt, hydraulic fluid, gasoline, diesel, and CEPLATTYN BL grease used in turbine applications.

Do you have an average expected lifespan?

Accepted Answer

We warranty ZLLT units for 5 years with an expected 10-year lifespan for interior installations. For exterior applications, we provide a 2-year warranty with an expected 5-year lifespan.

Question 3

What prevents these things from flying off the lug nuts? Is it just friction?

Accepted Answer

Retention comes from a snug mechanical fit and material resistance. Traditional Zafety Lug Lock® units include a slight rear chamfer for installation, then tighten as seated; turbine units are symmetrical and still fit snugly. In both cases, material flexibility and friction create sufficient resistance to keep units in place under vibration.

Do you have any test reports indicating the clamping force in a lugnut connection with and without the product?

Lug nuts are torqued to the required clamping pressure for each application, then Zafety Lug Lock® units are installed to retain nut position and resist rotation. Third-party test reports are available and can be downloaded from our About page.

Question 5

How much rotation does the device allow before “catching”? Or if it is already “caught” because it is such a tight fit, there should be some amount of flex in the material.

Accepted Answer

Normally there should be no rotation once installed; the nut is captured by the tooth geometry after torquing. In rare cases of significant thermal cycling and vibration, movement to the next tooth may occur, but tooth size is designed to minimize this. Re-torque can typically be performed without removing the unit when movement is minimal and done with a manual torque wrench.

What is your experience/testing/technical details with oil & grease resistance long term? I see mention on your website that the plastic is engineered with automotive products (fuel, fluids, etc.) in mind – could you give some more details on the plastic material and resistance to greases and oils in particular?

In automotive and transit use, units are routinely exposed to oils, greases, detergents, and wash cycles over many years. For turbine use, CEPLATTYN BL grease was specifically tested with the raw material supplier and no significant long-term material impact was reported within the warranty horizon.

Question 7

I see on the website and recall from our discussions that we could perform torque checks with the ZLLTs still on if necessary. If we end up having to remove the ZLLTs, how many “cycles” of removal and reinstallation can they withstand?

Accepted Answer

Vehicle-wheel deployments often involve multiple removal/reinstallation cycles per year. When removed and reinstalled correctly (pulling at the ends and avoiding sharp tools), units can tolerate many cycles without damage. Turbine units are usually removed less frequently than vehicle-wheel units but can still handle repeated service cycles when handled properly.

Acceptable temperature ranges – I see that you mentioned on the website, testing between -40F and +320F specifically to test resistance to nut rotation. What are the general temperatures that these can handle, and are they subject to any thermal fatigue/cracking over long periods of temperature swings?

The operating range is -40°C (-40°F) to +160°C (+320°F). Material selection was validated in demanding duty cycles including high-heat braking environments, cold-climate operations with major temperature swings, and hot-climate deployments, with field use indicating stable performance when properly installed and maintained.

Question 9

What are the expected failure modes and signs of wear as the units reach end of life?

Accepted Answer

Typical end-of-life indicators include color fading from UV exposure, rounded or frayed teeth, tearing at accordion-section edges, reduced resilience, and looser fit over nuts or bolts. These signs indicate replacement is recommended to maintain retention performance.
