Zafety Lug Lock®

Transit bus fleet with Zafety Lug Lock wheel nut retainers

Transit – Private, Public & School

Built for Transit Operators

Transit operators in the USA and around the world are finding out how easy it is to use a secondary safety device, Zafety Lug Lock®, on their wheel nuts and the peace of mind it brings.

Designed specifically to address the stresses of stop-and-go vehicles and longer-haul charters – operators use Zafety Lug Lock® to keep the public safe and the buses on the road by lowering the risk of wheel-offs and minimizing the risk of wheel-end damage from loose wheel nuts.

A high-temperature formulation was developed specifically to meet the demands of stop-and-go vehicles, specifically city transit buses. The unit fits snugly over two adjacent nuts and is installed with the "name side" out after the wheels and nuts have been properly installed and torqued as per the manufacturer's instructions. Zafety Lug Lock® is a wheel nut retainer, not just a wheel nut indicator.

Why Loose Lug Nuts Happen

Loose lug nuts occur due to vibration of the wheel and expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes, especially in situations where differing materials are in use (specifically aluminum rims and steel lug nuts and studs).

Once one nut has loosened even slightly it amplifies the problem and other nuts will begin to loosen at a faster rate, ultimately leading to a potential wheel-off. If the wheel and lug nuts have been properly installed and torqued as per the manufacturer's instructions, the secondary application of Zafety Lug Lock® stops the loosening process from beginning.

Transit Sizing Guide

Several different sizes apply to the transit industry with a larger 4 1/8″ (104.5 mm) stud center-to-center spacing with 1 5/16″ (33 mm) nuts specifically developed for city transit buses, and smaller 2.5″ (63.5 mm) stud center-to-center spacing with 1″ (25 mm) nuts for wheel-trans buses.

Intercity buses tend to use 3.5″ (88.9 mm) stud center-to-center spacing with 1 1/2″ (38 mm) nuts. Eight standard colours are available; corporate colours may also be available on request.

Warranty and Service Life

For transit applications, Zafety Lug Lock® units include a 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Units are reusable and last even longer when properly installed and removed as part of standard maintenance procedures.
